Power Tower

In late 2008 Highland Communications, Inc. erected a 165 foot lattice communications tower at its office site. The tower was fitted with a Proven wind turbine and 24 solar panels. The tower, outfitted with renewable energy (RE), was to be a prototype communications tower to show the efficacy of using renewable energy to run a cell site. It is engineered to hold four carriers. It was the culmination of several years of research by the company, and gave birth to Highland Energy Systems.

Originally the turbine was a Proven 6 kW, manufactured in Scotland. The Proven 15 kW was favored, but not available in the United States until 2009. The tower now boasts a Proven 15, and with twenty four 200 watt solar panels it is capable of producing more than enough power to run a typical cell site. The tower and turbine have gained national attention, shown on the cover of Home Power Magazine, NATE Magazine, and as the feature tower in Above Ground Level Magazine in December of 2009.
