It was the beginning of a very exciting day as the big crane arrived to install the Halus’ Vestas V17/75 kW wind turbine and its accompanying 60 foot tower. The Vestas machines are rebuilt in California by Halus, a company that rescues operating Vestas turbines that are being upgraded in the field. Highland Communications and its renewable energy crew put the turbine together and set it in the air with the help of a 100 ton crane supplied by Western Crane located in SeaTac, Washington. The turbine is located near Ellensburg at the Knudson Ranch, and will be connected to the power grid.

The first turbine will be flown on March 21, 2011, by Highland. There has been considerable rain and snow, holding back the installation of these two wind turbines. The systems are significant in that they are the very first community wind projects in the State. Funding has come from private investors and a grant from the Federal Government and Washington State coordinated by Cascade Community Wind in Bellingham.

The Alpha HPS Test Facility features a 7.5kW wind turbine mounted on a 100 foot lattice tower and a fully integrated Hybrid Power System (HPS). The HPS skid will house a 1320 Watt solar array, 533Ah 48V battery bank, 5kW AlphaGen and a DC Power Plant housing all power management electronics and controls. Alpha's system will be used as a testing and demonstration site. In the future, an expanded solar capacity will be added along with a solar vehicle charging station.

The panels cover nearly 80 per cent of the roof. These panels will supply electricity to the power grid, offsetting the cost of electric car charging stations. The county owns two electric vehicles, and has planned to purchase about a dozen more. The panels are expected to generate roughly 16,000 kilowatt hours annually, reducing grid-supplied electricity at the campus. Among the largest PV systems installed in Snohomish County, WA, the solar project will prevent 21,000 pounds of CO2 annually.

Highland Energy Systems competes in the Renewable Energy (RE) market with diversity because of the skills of its crews. We have a level of competency created by several years in the communications industry as a successful tower construction company under the parent company Highland Communications, Inc. Our crews consist of certified tower climbers and trained technicians capable of combining their skills for the many tasks required to proficiently complete a RE project. Highland can erect towers for meteorological studies and take them down when the study is completed. We can successfully design a system, order the components, assist with local jurisdictions and incentives to complete the assignment.
